Privacy Policy
Last updated: 20 May 2026
This policy explains how Barcode Scanner Simulator (“we”, “us”) handles information when you use our website at barcodescannersimulator.app, the Chrome extension, and (when released) the desktop application. We built the product for developers, QA engineers and integrators who need to simulate barcode scans — not to collect personal data.
Summary
- App settings and barcodes stay on your device. Mappings, hotkeys and advanced options are stored locally (Chrome
storage.localin the extension; the desktop app will use local app data when it ships). - We do not run our own accounts or analytics inside the extension. We do not sell your data.
- Pro activation sends your license key to Gumroad once for verification. That is the only routine network call initiated by the app for licensing.
- This website is a static marketing site. It does not use sign-in, cookies for tracking, or embedded third-party analytics in the page code.
Who is responsible
Barcode Scanner Simulator is published by the project maintainers. For privacy questions, contact us at hello@barcodescannersimulator.app.
Chrome extension
Data you provide
You choose what to store: barcode values, keyboard shortcuts, prefix/suffix strings, timing settings and (if you buy Pro) a license key. This information is saved in Chrome local storage on your device and is not uploaded to our servers because we do not operate a backend for extension settings.
Permissions
The extension requests:
- storage — to persist your mappings and license state locally.
- activeTab — to interact with the active tab when needed from the popup.
- Host access (<all_urls>) — so a content script can listen for your configured hotkeys and type into focused inputs on web pages you visit. The extension only acts when you press a configured shortcut; it does not read page content for advertising or profiling.
Pro license verification
If you activate Pro, the extension sends your license key and product identifier to Gumroad’s API (api.gumroad.com) to confirm the purchase. Gumroad processes that request under their own privacy policy. We do not receive your payment card details through the extension.
What we do not do
- No barcode cloud sync operated by us
- No advertising identifiers
- No sale or rental of user data
Desktop app (coming soon)
The upcoming Electron desktop app will follow the same principles: settings and barcode mappings stored locally on your computer, OS-global hotkey simulation, and the same one-time Gumroad license verification for Pro. This policy will be updated when the desktop app is released if anything changes.
Website (barcodescannersimulator.app)
The marketing site is a static site. When you visit, standard information may be logged by our hosting provider (e.g. IP address, browser type, requested URL, timestamp) for security and delivery — see Cloudflare below.
The site links to external pages (Chrome Web Store, Gumroad checkout, GitHub). Those services have their own policies. Download and purchase actions happen on their sites, not embedded in ours.
Third-party services
- Cloudflare — hosts and protects the website; may process connection metadata as part of CDN and security services.
- Google Chrome Web Store — distribution of the extension; governed by Google’s policies when you install or update.
- Gumroad — payment and license verification for Pro.
- GitHub — open-source repository and (when published) release downloads; optional if you choose to visit or download from there.
Retention
Extension and desktop data remain on your device until you remove them, uninstall the app, or clear extension storage. License verification does not require us to store your key on a server we control. Hosting logs at Cloudflare are retained according to their configuration and our account settings.
Your choices
- Uninstall the extension or clear its data in Chrome settings
- Deactivate Pro and remove the stored license key from the extension popup
- Contact us to ask questions or request help with data we control (e.g. email correspondence)
If you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to processing of personal data where applicable law applies. Because most app data never leaves your device, many requests are best handled by you locally; we will still respond to genuine inquiries at hello@barcodescannersimulator.app.
Children
The product is aimed at professionals testing software. It is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page when we ship new features (e.g. the desktop app) or change providers. The “Last updated” date at the top will change accordingly. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
